What is online creative writing mentoring?

If you are looking for a little more guidance with your creative writing than what your teacher can give you in the classroom and don't wish to commit to a formal online creative writing course then online creative writing mentoring is just the ticket for you. You may for example be working on an individual writing project that is not taught as an online course.

You will work with a professional writer and teacher, who will guide your writing through a number of aspects related to writing creative narratives.

See your mentor as a trusted friend who has your best writing interests at heart.

Who is it for?

Online creative writing mentoring is available for secondary students from a variety of age groups, who are interested in developing various creative writing skills.

You choose the writing project you are working on that you would like guidance with. Of course you can complete any of the creative writing e-workbooks with the assistance of your online mentor, but you don't have to. Click here for more information about creative writing e-workbooks.

Perhaps you would prefer the structure of an online creative writing course. Click here for more information about online creative writing courses.

If you are studying the NSW HSC English course, online creative writing mentoring is also available for you for the following courses:

  • Area of Study: Belonging (Section 2: Imaginative Writing)
  • Preliminary and HSC Extension 1 creative writing component (based on focus area)
  • Extension 2 creative writing component

How does online creative writing mentoring work?

Firstly, your mentor invites you to have a phone conversation about the nature of your creative writing piece, your writing purpose and what you hope to achieve by receiving mentoring.

Based on your purpose, nature of writing pieces and goals, your mentor sends you writing activities to be completed and returned in a word document to the mentor one week later.

Your mentor works with you by reading, editing and writing comments about your creative piece. We use track changes in Word documents, so you need to have access to Microsoft Word. You mentor will guide you through using this tool if you are unfamiliar with the software.

If you have a substantial creative piece of writing, you can opt to not receive writing activities. Your mentor will read, edit and write comments about your creative piece only.
